OCEAN RIDGE LADIES GOLF
Ladies golf at Ocean Ridge is made up of competitive and casual play. The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association, ORLGA, conducts competitive competitions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Nine and eighteen hole groups are available for casual play for ladies new to the game of golf and those wishing to play in a non-competitive environment. Your fellow Ocean Ridge lady golfers welcome you to what we sincerely call “Paradise” and hope that you’ll consider joining us for good times and good games.
ORGANIZATION: “The purpose of the ORLGA is to encourage enjoyment of the game of golf, and to familiarize players with the rules, good sportsmanship and etiquette of the game. The ORLGA and its members will adhere to the USGA Rules of Golf except where modified by the ORLGA’s local rules. Membership shall be extended to any female resident or property owner within Ocean Ridge Plantation upon payment of annual dues.” (Constitution and By-Laws of the ORLGA)
We elect yearly officers at the December Christmas party who, except for the Treasurer, may serve in that capacity no more than 2 consecutive years.A list of officers may be found at:   Ocean Ridge Contacts.
Regular ORLGA meetings are held quarterly, usually on the first Tuesday in January, April, July and October at the Plantation Club. The dues for the year are payable to the Treasurer and are $25.00 with an optional payment of $3.00 for hole-in-one insurance. (Maria Coggins had a hole-in-one in 2002 and was awarded $150.00 by the league.) Early in the year a membership directory of names, phone numbers, email addresses and birthdays (no years) is distributed the current year’s members. A membership application is included for your convenience.
REGULAR GOLF GAMES: League golf tee times are scheduled by the pro-shop and are early on Tuesday mornings and around noon on Thursdays randomly on all three courses. There are sign-up sheets in the ladies’ lounge at Lion’s Paw/Panther’s Run pro-shop for these days. Sign-up must be made no later than 3 days before the day of play – by Saturday AM for Tuesdays and by Monday AM for Thursdays. Peggy Rowland (579-4014) has the overall responsibility for Tuesday games, as does Fay Morrisson (575-4992) for Thursday. These golf games are friendly and competitive, whether playing for individual or team scores. Each person pays $2.00 to enter and prize money is distributed after we finish at either Tamer’s Restaurant or Tiger’s Eye Grille. Interspersed in the regular Tues.-Thurs. games are special and fun events. We also have “scrambles”, member-member events and 2-day ringer tournaments throughout the year.
ORLGA has in the past and is today offering opportunities for help in the understanding of the rules of golf, golf etiquette and other topics of interest. There is also an illustrated USGA pocket rules book available to purchase for those who are interested in having a handy reference when needed.
LADIES CASUAL GOLF: Ladies casual golf (nine and eighteen holes) is
made up of league and non-league women golfers who want to play non
competitively, in an informal and social way with the focus on having fun in
the great outdoors. It is the perfect
format for those who are just learning the game offering a relaxed atmosphere,
neighborly camaraderie and a comfortable way to meet new friends. Beginners as well as advanced players are
welcome to participate. This group
follows the rules, but does not enforce them.
The emphasis is on having a good time - not winning.
Sign up sheets are
posted in the Women's Lounge of the Lion's Paw/Panther's Run Clubhouse for play
Monday through Friday. The first person
of each foursome is responsible for securing a tee time for that foursome
(never fear: the foursome always seems to fill up). Those interested in
playing nine holes may call MaryLiz Scharf at 575-7323, eighteen holes Marilyn
Pounds at 575-7981 for additional information.
There are no dues and/or fees to
play with this group. As with all other
golf groups, it is important that you follow the tee time procedures set by
Ocean Ridge regarding bookings and cancellation.
In addition to golf, the women's casual golfers schedule periodic "Ladies' Night Out" events just for the fun of it all. Join us, we guarantee a good time.
TOURNAMENT AND CHARITABLE GOLF: In the past the ORLGA hosted two Invitational Tournaments and last year we had our first Member-Guest Tournament. ORLGA has affiliation with three area ladies’ golfing groups, the Ladybirds, Under 25 and WGSDGA, which provide the opportunities to play at many of the neighboring golf courses.
Our ladies club championship competition has been held at different times during the year, once in October and three times in June. The committee, with league approval, decides upon the date. This tournament is flighted and everyone is encouraged to enter. (The winner of the championship flight gets her own reserved parking spot in the first row at Lion’s Paw!)
We had our first “Rally for a Cure Tournament” -- one that supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation – last year in August. The participation was wonderful, and we were proud that we raised $800.00 in this, our initial endeavor. We have also supported the Hope Harbor House, which is located in Brunswick County and provides a safe haven for battered women and their children. There is an annual tournament to benefit Hope Harbor, and each year we have sent a 12-person team to compete in it. For the past two years we have also contributed $100.00 to sponsor one of the golf holes at the host course.
FOR FUN AND FOR GOOD CAUSES: Besides having meetings and playing golf the ORLGA also has fun. We often have refreshments at meetings, sometimes a potluck luncheon before meetings and after “big” events we’ve had catered luncheons. The main social event of the year is our catered Christmas party. (Lunch fee is covered by dues.) Not only is this a very nice event but we also ask for contributions so that we can adopt a family and supply some of their Christmas hopes. Last year we had between $400 and $500 to spend on toys, clothes and gift certificates! What a good feeling that gave to all of us. (The Brunswick County Family Assistance office supplies information about the family and their needs.)
JOIN US! Whatever type golfer you consider yourself, we know you’ll find a niche within ORLGA. Many of us came to Ocean Ridge a bit leery of joining an organized golf group – mostly for fear of not being good enough. As it turned out, everyone is good enough. Some days we’re even great. But most times we have good shots, awful shots, and lots of laughs and commiseration in between. Try us. You’ll like us!
